Kitchen Space Planning, Appliances, and Best Tips

The kitchen is one of our favorite rooms in the home. We spend a lot of time cooking and eating with our families and friends. If you are working on a remodel or refresh of your kitchen, we have some of our best tips for space planning your kitchen.

The range is easily the focal point of the kitchen, creating a sense of location and a beautiful statement. The size of a range depends on the space and also how much cooking is done. For a smaller kitchen, we’d suggest a 30”-36”. With a moderate size, a 40”-48”. For a large, a 60” or a double oven under the stovetop. If adding a hood, plan for 3”-5” bigger than the range for added luxury and generous scale. We always recommend drawing out the size you are wanting in the plans and see what pantry or storage needs would need to be removed to accommodate the range. This easy tip will make it easy to be sure the size fits appropriately and is placed in a center point of the kitchen.

A common question is the size of the kitchen sink. Like the range, this depends a lot on personal preference. We generally recommend a 33”-36” wide sink and in white instead of stainless steel. A single basin is usually best for those with babies and those who do dishes by hand. A divided sink easily separates clean from dirty dishes and provides two separate sinks. We also suggest drawing out your sink dimensions in your initial plans to make sure it is the perfect fit.

For cabinets, we always recommend counter depth. This keeps the look and flow of the kitchen consistent. We also love to add paneling to the fridge. It is an added luxury, but it makes the fridge fit beautifully with an intentional, seamless design. Do not panel the microwave or dishwasher, as overtime steam will ruin the finish.

Our final recommendation is to work with a professional. Having a designer on your side will simplify your workload and they have the sole purpose of helping you create an elevated, liveable space meant for you. If you are wanting to refresh your kitchen with new furniture, paint, or artwork, our complimentary designers are available here. To shop our Kitchen Collection, check it out here.
